We don't often do book reviews, but given that BizChinaUpdate's Gary Bowerman contributed one of the 'journeys' (Shanghai-Lhasa) in the new Time Out Great Train Journeys of the World book, we thought we'd give it a little plug.

1.3 billion People, a fast growing economy, bustling cities like Hong
Kong, Shanghai or Beijing: China is on its way to be a more and more
dominant player on the world stage. However, with the opportunities
come many obstacles for foreign enterprises to be successful. By all
accounts the key challenge remains the management of people to achieve
world-class operations.

Haier, TCL, Lenovo or Brilliance – the Chinese champions are conquering
the Western markets. Both big state owned and private Chinese
enterprises are increasingly active in high level outbound M&A,
they build up high-tech factories and install R&D centers at home
as well as in overseas. The Chinese overseas investment has increased
dramatically – from some hundred million USD a few years ago up to
billions of USD in 2007.

Business Insights: China is very different from the multitude of books by Western commentators, often academics rather than experienced business managers, that have flooded the market in recent years.
The principal author and editor, Jonathan Reuvid has been actively
engaged in joint venture development in China, both as a consultant and
an investor since 1984. He is also the co-editor of Doing Business with
China, now in its fifth edition, in association with China Association
of International Trade (CAIT), an affiliate of the Ministry of
Commerce. This publication was acknowledged as a leading handbook for
decision-makers in Western business corporations worldwide.
