After numerous fatalities due to a drug manufactured by Qiqihar No 2 Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, the Guangzhou People's Intermediate Court sentenced five of its employees to serve between four and seven years in prison for their roles in the outrage.

Thirteen deaths caused by kidney failure was the result following administration of the drug at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou and sixty patients fell ill after taking the treatment in 2006, with the drug claiming its 14th life in January this year.

Relatives of the victims filed a law suit against Qiqihar No 2 Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Health Care Goods Co, and Guangzhou Jinhengyuan Medicine Trading Co, which the court believes each had a hand in the deaths, were ordered to pay a combined RMB3.5m, media reports.

The court ruled that between RMB7,100 and RMB660,000 should be paid to the plaintiffs as compensation based on the degree to which they have been affected by the drug. This will become effective in 18 days unless an appeal is filed within 15 days of the ruling, the court said.
