China's tennis player Zheng Jie lost her semi-final against Serena Williams in Wimbledon 2-6, 6-7, after missing setpoints. "I am quite satisfied with the performance", she said. The Chinese tennis queen now focuses on the Olympics.
Earlier this week, China received a huge pre-Olympic sporting boost as Wild Card entry
Zheng Jie became its first tennis player to reach a Grand Slam tennis
singles semi final.
Zheng's run to the Wimbledon semi finals is no less remarkable for the
fact that she is a renowned doubles player – who won the women's
doubles title at Wimbledon two years ago – not a singles specialist.
Along the way to a semi final date with Serena Williams, Zheng defeated
French Open champion and World Number One Ana Ivanovic. In yesterday's
quarter final, a three-sets victory over 18th seeded Nicole Vaidisova,
she was cheered on by an estimated home TV audience of 100 million.
Zheng, who celebrates her 25th birthday on Saturday, will donate her
minimum £187,500 prize money to the fund for earthquake survivors in
Sichuan province. "I would like to give all the money," Zheng said,
"but some will go to the tennis association. Apart from this I will do some charity work when I get back after Wimbledon."
Next up professionally for Zheng is a rather large date in Beijing.
"Maybe this is my last tournament before the Olympics," she told The
Guardian. "The Olympics in China is very important. Everyone wants to
win a gold medal. I think maybe the doubles is more a chance for me to win the gold medal. But I will play both singles and doubles."
