Its huge economic potential in China has spurred on the National Basketball Association to launch its first stores in Beijing, luring a combined USD253m investment from Walt Disney’s ESPN and Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-Shing.
The two stores, which will reportedly be miniature versions of the
association’s flagship stores in New York, are the first of up to 1,000
planned in China. Sale of NBA goods in the country has been steadily
climbing and is expected to increase by 40 per cent powered by the
Olympic Games. NBA China CEO was quoted as saying that "We've had super
growth in the last couple of years and when we look at the potential,
it's just amazing. After the Olympics, people in China will know more
about our players.”
Probably the most popular sport in China, basketball is said to have
450 million spectators and the Chinese Basketball Association estimates
that the sport currently has 300 million participants in the country.
