Chinese state media today published stories claiming security forces have "thwarted five terrorism groups plotting attacks on the Beijing Olympic Games." It adds that the Peoples' Liberation Army forces are on "full alert for next months' Olympics."
Though the exact timing of the actions is unclear, Shanghai Daily adds
that 82 people in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region "were planning
to sabotage the Olympics." The report adds that Chinese forces
"destroyed 41 'holy war' training bases [in Xinjiang] from January to
June" - including a raid last Tuesday that "killed five terrorists,
injured two and seized another eight."
In a news report today, Chinese media confirms that "Combat aircraft,
helicopters, warships, surface-to-air missiles, chemical-defence
equipment and radar would be used in case of security threats" in
August.
The reports come at a time of an intensified military presence in
Beijing, and repeated videos on subway TV screens in Shanghai
interweaving Olympic sporting footage with images of elite military
training programmes.
