NBC to Show 3,600 Hours of Beijing Olympics
American TV network NBC will cover the Beijing Olympics more
extensively than all previous summer Games combined, with a total of
3,600 hours on 12 different platforms. The schedule includes 2,900
hours of live TV coverage, including final competitions for swimming
and gymnastics. In the past, NBC and other U.S. TV stations aired 2,562
hours of "all previous Summer Games combined", USA Today quotes a
statement from the network.
Arcapita Invests USD2 bn in China Wind Farms
Bahrain-based Arcapita Bank has formed a partnership with Singapore's
Colossus Holdings to set up wind farms in northern China's Inner
Mongolia province, Reuters reports. The joint venture will invest USD2
bn to buy Honiton Energy Holdings, a Chinese wind energy generator, and
to finance the wind farms. By 2012, the capacity is planned to reach
1,650 MW. Official statistics show that as of 2007, total wind energy
capacity in China stood at 6,000MW per year.
Carlyle Group Buys Into Sinorgchem
U.S. private equity firm Carlyle Group will invest USD87m in Shanghai
chemical company Sinorgchem Group, state media reports. The Chinese corporation
is the "largest supplier of para-phenylenediames (PPDs), a key chemical
additive in the production of rubber products", Xinhua new agency adds.
Dell Aims For 3,000 China Stores
Dell has announced plans to increase its number of direct shops in
China from 1,800 to 3,000 by the end of 2008, Min Yida, President of
Dell Greater China, was quoted by state media. The company will further
develop its direct marketing model, but will continue its cooperation
with Chinese retailers, such as Gome and Suning, through which most
Dell computers are sold.
Hyundai Invests USD2 bn in China
Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of the world's largest shipbuilders, will
invest USD2 bn in China over the next five years, the China Securities
Journal reports. Projects will include a USD50m loader plant in
Shandong province, construction machines, ocean logistics, passenger planes and new energy developments.
China Oilfield Services Eyes Awilco Buy
Oilfield Services Ltd, one of China's largest oil producers, is
offering USD2.5 bn for Norway-based oil and gas drilling Awilco
Offshore ASA, Bloomberg reports. The Chinese company is interested to
gain access to its seven rigs for drilling and exporting oil. The cash
offer values Awilco at a 19 per cent premium compared to its current
market value of USD2.1 bn.
