Beijing will open three new subway lines for trial operations this Sunday, as new traffic congestion measures come into effect for the Olympic Games period. From Sunday, vehicles with even and odd number plates will have to run on alternate days on Beijing's roads.

The three new subway lines are the Airport Line, Olympic Branch Line and Line No. 10. Built at a total cost of RMB22.3 bn, they will increase the number of subway lines in the Chinese capital to eight, and the total length of track to 200km, from the current 142km. The trains used on the new lines can carry 1,424 passengers each.

The Airport Line will link Dongzhimen rail station in the city with Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport. Trains will run at an average interval of 15 minutes, and the 28km trip will take about 20 minutes. The single fare price is expected to be RMB25.
