China Unicom and Netcom Lay Off 600
China Unicom and China Netcom will lay off 600 employees to streamline the organisational structure of the merged company, Trading Market reports. Unicom has 700 people on its payroll and Netcom 500, working in 27 and 21 departments that "are overlapping now", an Unicom official was quoted as saying in the state media. As a result, it is expected that about half of the 1,200 employees will be surplus to requirements.

AMD Joins Forces With SSC
California-based AMD will establish a "joint technology laboratory" with the Shanghai Supercomputer Center (SSC), the company announced in a statement. The move intends to consolidate the existing cooperation of the two partners. The new laboratory, based in Shanghai, will allow experts from AMD and SSC to work closely together. There were no financial details released but state media said that the new partnership will help the two companies cooperate in technology development and at the applications level.
