China's Olympic cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, have reportedly suspended the issuing of business visas, Chinese and foreign media report.
Shanghai's Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission has
announced it will not approve or process any applications for business
visas until the second week of September. It adds that there may be
exceptions for "essential travels" but visits for inspections, market research and training will not be granted, The Guardian reports.
Hong Kong's South China Morning Post writes that four other Olympic
cities, Beijing, Qingdao, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao, will apply similar
restrictions. The government says that the new curbs are necessary to
"ensure the smooth hosting of the Olympics and safeguard the city's social stability during the Olympics".
