Almost there. With just 12 days to go, the global media coverage of the Beijing Olympics is ramping up. Earlier last week, a BBC reporter stood precariously beside a Beijing freeway with a handheld device that measures particulate matter in the air. The air pollution results, he admitted, were better than in the days before Beijing implemented new traffic regulations last Sunday.
Taking a sporting angle, Time's cover photo is of Chinese 110-metres
hurdling gold medal holder Liu Xiang. China's great athletic hope is
the front for the magazine's feature on 100 Stars to Watch this August.
On a less sporting note, Saturday's South China Morning Post reported
the arrest of one of its photojournalists, and the man-handing by
police of another, during the crowd chaos at the sale of the final batch of Olympic tickets in Beijing this week.
Amid the sporting and organisational issues, there is some publishing
fun being to be had. Our award for Best 'Special Olympics Issue' cover
goes to Hong Kong's Beats magazine, which has produced a vivid red
cartoon-scape with the five Olympic fuwa mascots indulging in some 'animated' fun.
As for us? Look out this week for more details about BizChina's special
2008 Olympics coverage. We will be collaborating with a U.S. publisher
to produce daily news and information – with a very particular angle.
This dedicated coverage will begin on 7 August, the day before the opening ceremony, and will run until 25 August.
