Tibet's economic growth slowed in the first half of 2008 "due to the impact of the 14 March riot in Lhasa and other factors," state media reports, quoting Zhang Qingli, Secretary of the Communist Party of China.
Tibet's GDP was RMB16.18 bn in the first half of 2008, which represented a 7.3 per cent growth slowdown year-on-year, according to the regional bureau of statistics. All three main sectors slowed, particularly industry and services, said Zhang. "This is the most difficult year in recent years in terms of economic development," said Qiangba Puncog, Tibet's Regional Government Chairman.
Tourism arrivals from January to June were officially down 69 per
cent, due to the restrictions on visiting the region in the aftermath
of the March protests.
