China Leads Renewable Energy Production
China is the world's largest producer of renewable-energy measured by installed generating capacity, Bloomberg reports, citing a new report by the Climate Group. The NGO also says that China is the "top manufacturer of solar cells and will be the leading exporter of wind turbines by 2009". At the same time, 75 per cent of the country's electricity is generated by coal, Wu Changhua, China Director of the Climate Group was quoted.
Futures Market Grows 76 Per Cent
China's futures market saw a 76 per cent growth in trade volume in July compared to the same 2007 month, the China Futures Association said in a new report. Some 112 million contracts were responsible for a trade volume of RMB6.45 trillion last month. The main reason for the sharp increase is reportedly fluctuating farm product prices and the new launch of futures for zinc, palm and, most recently, gold.
