Construction for a new RMB37.5 bn bridge connecting Guangdong province with Hong Kong and Macau will start in 2010.
As reported in March,
the RMB37.5 bn cost for the 18 mile long bridge will be funded by the
central government, the three municipal parties and private investors.
The central government and Guangdong province will contribute RMB7 bn, Hong
Kong will pay RMB6.8 bn and Macau RMB1.9 bn. The remainder will be
financed by loans, Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said after a
meeting with Guangdong officials.
Toll fees will be used to repay the loans, Reuters quotes a government
official. The bridge will connect Hong Kong's Lantau Island, crossing
to Macau and eventually linking with the city of Zhuhai in southern
Guangdong province.
