"Jiayou, Zhongguo!" Remember that chant, because you'll be hearing it a great deal between August 8-24, whether you're in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games or watching coverage from home. Translated roughly as "Go, China," the chant is part of a four-step official cheering routine that Beijingers have been practicing to encourage China's gold medal hopefuls in the sporting events.
But beyond the instantly iconic "Bird's Nest" (Beijing National
Stadium, pictured in the above header) – where dress rehearsals are
being performed for Friday's lavish Opening Ceremony – Beijing, the
city, is also practicing hard. This is the first time that China has
hosted an international event of this magnitude, and the tension is
palpable citywide. Security levels are high – with military guards
prominently positioned at the airport, in the subway, and on the
streets. Anti-aircraft missiles are even in place around Olympic Green, home to many of the main stadiums.
