Japan's memory chip maker Elpida is investing in a joint venture with Suzhou Venture Group and other investors to build a USD5 bn production plant for dynamic RAM wafers.
Elpida will hold 39 per cent in the Suzhou joint venture, ComputerWorld
Malaysia reports. The Japanese will contribute a part of the USD720m
initial investment to build the plant. The Suzhou Venture Group, and
other unnamed investors, will finance the remainder with capital and
loans. The total cost of the plant may reach USD5 bn, Elpida said in a
statement.
The facility will produce 40,000 300-milimetre wafers per month. Elpida
will use all the wafers to meet demand in China. Construction of the plant is scheduled to finish in 2010.
