New statistics from IT research company Analysys show that Baidu's share in the domestic search engine market rose to 64.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2008, up 3.7 per cent, while Google's share is shrinking. Experts say this trend is unlikely to change soon as Baidu has a competitive edge in converting queries into Chinese language.
Baidu's most prominent competitors Google and Yahoo China saw their
market shares shrink from 26.8 per cent to 26.1 per cent, and from 8.3 per cent to 5.3 per cent, respectively.
"Baidu may be better than Google in predicting what is searched for
based on [Chinese] symbols typed," says Sandra Zerr of Oban
Multilingual. Enquiro Research adds that "Google's search algorithm is
not adequately matched to Chinese users' intent," and that the U.S.
firm is subject to governmental restrictions that Baidu is not.
