After two unsuccessful ventures, America Online has entered China with its own website
providing news, entertainment, sports and other online content in Chinese
language. The site will compete with well established Chinese portals including
Sina and Yahoo China.
America Online launched chinese.aol.com this week,
state media reports. The site offers all kind of news content covering finance,
entertainment, science, automobiles, fashion, and, the Olympics. Users are also
able to search for pictures and videos with a Google-powered search engine.
In 2001, AOL already tried to
enter the Chinese online market when it set up a joint venture with Lenovo and
jointly invested USD100m to promote a portal called fm365.com. Three years later, the joint venture dissolved
and so did its other venture it started with china.com.
Earlier this year, AOL also
launched a site for Hong Kong.
