Visitors from China to the United States grew 33 per cent year on year in the first six months of 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Total visitation from Asia as a whole increased two per cent for the
year to date. Japanese arrivals decreased three per cent, which
represents a major concern as Japan accounts for 52 per
cent of all Asian visitors to the United States for the year.
From January to June, U.S. arrivals from South Korea, India and China
grew one per cent, 11 per cent and 33 per cent, respectively. Taiwanese
visitation decreased by two per cent.
The United States received a total of 23.9 million international
visitors during the first six months of 2008, an increase of 11 per
cent over the same 2007 period. In June 2008, total visitation was four
million, an increase of eight per cent over June 2007. Year-to-date
arrivals from Canada grew 17 per cent, as did visitation from western
Europe.
