Health inspectors have found melamine-contaminated fresh- and long-life milk from three major dairy producers, state media reports.

Fresh and long-life milk samples of China's most-trusted dairy producers Yili, Mengniu and Bright Dairy included the toxic chemical melamine, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said on its website. Some 24 out of 1,202 batches were found to be contaminated, the report said. The government has ordered the companies to recall their products from supermarket shelves immediately. No contamination was found in products of Beijing Sanyuan Foods and Nestle.

Contaminated baby milk formula has so far resulted in the deaths of four infants, with 6,244 babies reported to have fallen ill with kidney stones after drinking contaminated milk.
