- Private equity investment in August hit USD410m, down almost 70 per cent month-on-month, Chinese media reports. In the first six months of 2008, 73 companies received private equity investments totalling USD5.24 bn.

- China held USD518.7 bn worth of U.S. treasury bonds in July, USD14.9 bn more than in June, according to the U.S. Treasury. Japan remains the largest holder, increasing its bonds by USD9.6 bn in July, to USD593.4 bn. The UK is the third largest investor, with USD290.8 bn.

- Shanghai's real estate developers are reducing prices by up to RMB5,000 per square metre in certain downtown areas. The average residential property price in the city was RMB9,545 per square metre in July, down 13.8 per cent month-on-month, according to statistics from CB Richard Ellis.

 

- China expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year, with production to exceed 510 million tonnes, state media reports. This would constitute an increase of 10 million tonnes compared to 2007.

- The government has removed stamp tax on stock purchases in an effort to boost the equities market. On Friday, the Shanghai Composite and the Shenzhen stock market both rose more than 9 per cent, following the global week-end uplift.

- According to China's standards, the number of people in poverty has dropped from 250 million in 1978 to 14.8 million in 2007, according to state media.

- A new survey in China by American International Assurance shows that 60 percent of respondents believe they do not have sufficient finances or funds to maintain their current standard of living when retired, China Daily reports.
