Nestle dairy products have been withdrawn from shelves of two Hong Kong supermarket chains after a local newspaper reported that the government found melamine in Neslac Gold. Nestle says its products are not contaminated.

Apple Daily, a Hong Kong tabloid, wrote that tests have found melamine in Neslac Gold. Melamine is a chemical that has been reportedly used by Chinese dairy companies to fake the protein level in baby formula and fresh milk and led to the death of for infants and hospitalised 12,892.

Nestle says it is "confident that none of its products are made from milk adulterated with melamine," and adds that "Chinese authorities have issued official certificates for all tested Nestle products stating that no melamine has been detected in any of them." These certificates have been issued between 16 and 20 September.

The Swiss multinational asked Apple Daily to share the obtained test results with the company for clarification. According to Nestle, its Neslac Gold product was tested by government-approved independent laboratories such as the Hong Kong Standards and Testing Centre Ltd. and the Food Industry Research and Development in Taiwan. Neither detected any melamine in the product.
