Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said during his visit in Beijing that his country intends to build three joint-venture refineries in China to process Venezuelan crude oil.
"China is investing over there, Venezuela is investing over here. We
are talking about three refineries, to bring our crude, which is heavy,
and process it here in China," Chavez told the media in Beijing. The
two countries are also discussing the mobilisation of a tanker fleet to
ship the crude oil from South America to China.
China increased its crude imports from Venezuela in the first eight
months of 2008 by 60 per cent compared to the same 2007 period. Total
imports hit 5.18 million tonnes, or 155,000 barrels a day. In May, the
two countries agreed to jointly build a 400,000 barrel-per-day plant in
Guangdong province.
