The European Union has said a ban on all food for children imported from China came into force yesterday, AP reports.
The European Commission's decision to ban Chinese-made foodstuff for
children comes after several EU countries and industries announced
their own bans. The EU has issued a total ban on all products from
China aimed at infants and young children, AP reports.
However, a Commission spokeswoman pointed out that: "As far as we know,
there has been no contamination in food originating from China which has already been imported into the EU."
UK supermarket chain Tesco has withdrawn China-made White Rabbit Creamy
Candies worldwide after the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) has asked
retailers to do so. But an FSA representative said the request to
withdraw the candies was merely a precaution and, "There is no evidence
that any products containing the affected milk products have made it to
the UK."
