Parents of a one-year-old boy who became sick after drinking melamine-contaminated baby formula have filed a lawsuit against Sanlu Group, the WSJ reports.

The family, from Henan province, filed the lawsuit against Sanlu Group with support from Beijing-based law firm Deheng, and is seeking RMB150,000 in compensation for covering hospital fees, travel expenses, time off from work and other costs.

The law suit, filed in China's central Henan province, is the first in relation to the ongoing contaminated dairy scandal, state media reports.

Sanlu Group, which is majority-owned by the Chinese government and by New Zealand-based Fonterra Inc., was the first company that was found using melamine to fake the protein level of its milk products.

So far, four infants have been confirmed death and 53,000 have been hospitalised after consuming melamine-contaminated foods. The official casualty figures have not, however, been updated for several days.

According to government sources, 22 Chinese companies have used the toxic chemical in dairy products. Several countries around the world have imposed a ban on Chinese dairy products, and brands including Cadbury, Heinz and Unilever have recalled products that include Chinese dairy ingredients.
