Air Asia Opens Guilin - Kuala Lumpur Route
The Malaysia-based low-cost airline has opened its seventh China service destination, with a new route between Guilin, the capital of Guizhou province, and Kuala Lumpur. Four weekly flights depart in either direction. The airline now flies from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Haikou, Hangzhou and Guilin to the Malaysian capital, and will shortly add a new service from Tianjin.

 

China Plans First National Park
China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and the National Tourism Administration have approved the establishment of China's first pilot national park. Tangwanghe National Park is located near the Hinggan Mountains, Heilongjiang province, and comprises “primeval forests and geological relics.” The space will be used for tourism and conservation purposes, as well as scientific research, according to the Ministry.

"Golden Week" Sees Record Travel
Some 18.29 million people travelled in China during the National Day Golden Week" holiday, the National Tourism Administration said in a statement. This is an increase of 13.2 per cent compared to 2007. Olympic venues and the city of Beijing were reportedly 'hot' destinations. Visitor numbers to the Forbidden City increased almost 80 per cent on a year-on-year basis, officials said. The Olympic Green, home of the "Bird's Nest" National Stadium and the Water Cube
Aquatics Centre, recorded 2.17 million visits.

Dongfeng Starts Hybrid Production in 2009
Dongfeng Electric Vehicle Co will start production of its own hybrid car in early 2009, the AutoChannel reports. The company plans to produce 5,000 units a year in its Wuhan plant. Other hybrid cars, including Toyota's Prius and Honda's Civic, are expected to sell 1,000 and 200 units this year.

Shanghai Taxi Operators May Merge
Dazhong and Jinjiang, two of Shanghai's major taxi operators, look set to merge as the government looks at ways to lower costs and streamline operations. "The technical details of the merger have yet to be worked out. But things are moving very quickly and a final plan could be announced as early as this month," Reuters quotes a source familiar with the matter. Dazhong operates a fleet of more than 9,000 taxis, while Jinjiang Group has 4,000 taxis. Credit Suisse owns a small part in state-run Dazhong, while Jinjiang is controlled by China's largest hotel operator, Jinjiang Group.

China Recalls Ginseng Injections
Three people died in a hospital after receiving herbal injections, state media reports. The drug, made from Siberian gingseng, was recalled by the Health Ministry. Food and drug officials are investigating Wandashan Pharmaceutical, which has been making the drug for more than 30 years.

6 More Arrests in Dairy Scandal

Chinese police have detained six people suspected of producing and selling melamine, Reuters reports. The toxic chemical is the cause of China's ongoing contaminated   dairy products. The arrests were made in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia, which is a key dairy-producing area. The arrests follow the detention last week of 22 people in Hebei province for suspected involvement in producing melamine and selling it to milk farms and purchasing stations.
