China Cars Sales Shrink
Passenger car sales in China decreased in September by 1.44 per cent year-on-year, to 552,800, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in a statement. Sales of major foreign car makers were up: Ford's sales rose 7.13 per cent in the first nine months of 2008, and Volkswagen said it has sold 13.1 per cent more vehicles in its greater China region including Hong Kong and Macau, Reuters reports. Last year, however, both car makers posted a 30 per cent increase in the same period.

China Mobile Plans Silicon Valley R&D Centre
China Mobile, the country's largest mobile phone company, said it plans to open a research and development centre in Silicon Valley, California, in 2009. It would be the company's first overseas R&D site, state media reports. According to Huang Xiaoqing, President of China Mobile's Institute of Research, Silicon Valley was chosen because it has "the best environment" for telecoms innovation.
