- "Thougher environmental controls" have led to a reduction of pollution in China, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said. Emissions of chemical oxygen demand have reportedly totaled 6.74 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2008. This is a decrease of 2.48 per cent compared to the same period a year ago. Air pollution has as well improved as sulfur dioxide emissions dropped 3.96 per cent to 12.13 million tonnes.
- The Central government decided to spend RMB20 bn on rural water conservation projects to help boost the slowing economy, state media reports.
- Cargo and the number of passengers at the Beijing Capital International Airport grew 1.6 per cent in the first 10 months of 2008. This is the lowest pace since 2000. In 2007, the airport handled 53 million passengers, making it the world's ninth busiest, state media writes.
- The domestic hotel and catering industry recorded a 25.8 per cent
increase of its retail sales, the Ministry of Commerce said. In
October, revenue rose to RMB147.33 bn while the figure for the
first ten months of 2008 reached RMB1.25 trillion.
- Beijing's property rental market saw prices dropping in October. In 11
districts, the average property rent dropped between 2 and 3.5 per cent
for apartments with up to three bedrooms.
- China will issue the "22nd batch of book-entry treasury bonds" valued
at RMB22.5 bn in the last week of November, the Ministry of Finance
said on Friday. The seven year bonds have a fixed annual yield of 2.71
per cent.
- A massive coalfield with 23 billion tonnes has been discovered in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, state media reports. The field is located 800 metres underground and covers an area of roughly 300 sq km. It is estimated that Xinjiang's coal reserves are somewhere between 1.82 trillion and 2.19 trillion, which makes it the home of 40 per cent of China's total coal reserves.
