Alibaba Ups Online Search Investment
Hangzhou-based e-commerce group Alibaba will invest RMB300m to develop its online search engine Yahoo Koubei in 2009, state media reports. The engine will be launched on a website along with information about food, real estate, community services, leisure, culture, healthcare and education. In 2005, Alibaba and Yahoo started a partnership to jointly enter the Chinese online search market and compete with Baidu, Google and other established search engines.

MediCare Covers More Rural Residents
Some 814 million people, or 91.5 per cent of the rural population, have joined the cooperative medical insurance system, The Ministry of Health said in a statement. The system, launched in 2003, served some 370 million people in the first three quarters of 2008 - and the significant jump has gone unexplained. An individual needs to pay RMB20 per year, while different governmental bodies provide an annual RMB80 top-up per person. The system currently has funds of RMB71 bn, according to official figures.
