U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps's haul of eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics have earned him a deal – reportedly worth more than USD1m – to endorse automaker Mazda in China.
The sponsorship with Phelps is the largest single deal of its kind with
a western celebrity in Chinese history, according to a statement from
DMG Entertainment. The company says the deal "demonstrates the buoyancy
of China's advertising economy."
Phelps, the world's most decorated Olympian who has won 14 gold medals
overall, will exclusively endorse the new Mazda 6 model. The TV and
print promotional campaign will be unveiled by mid-2009. Phelps will
also return to China to make personal appearances on behalf of Mazda.
