A large delegation from the Chinese province of Hebei visited Rotterdam
last week, to view a new port that is being constructed to handle
energy-related bulk goods, including coal.
Hebei's main port of Qinghuangdao handles 200 million tonnes of coal each year. By comparison, Rotterdam – the largest European coal port – has an annual throughput of 27 million tonnes. Qinghuangdao has designs to become the first 'Green Port' in northern China, and is considering working with the province of Zuid-Holland on a co-development programme. The Chinese officials were reported to be particularly interested in the adoption of environmental efficiency designs at the new Rotterdam port installations.
Specific projects inspected by the Hebei team included new low-emissions, coal-fired power stations, integrated LNG terminals and a number of new biofuel plants.
