Is Poverty in Rural China Underestimated?
China has released its national development report for 2007, which concludes that the poor population in rural areas may have been largely underestimated. The current poverty line in China is set at annual earnings of RMB683 a year or less. However, international standards classify poor people as having an income of USD1 or less per day, or RMB2,737, per year. The government has not released figures regarding the number of people who would fall under the international classification of being poor in China.
