The highly anticipated 12th Special Olympics Games started this week at the Shanghai Stadium with a sepctacular opening ceremony on Tuesday evening. Chinese President Hu Jintao gave a welcome speech followed by special international guests, Timothy Shriver, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Colin Farrell, and local Stars including Zhang Zhiyi, Karen Mok and Jackie Chan.
The Games run until the 11th of October and brings together some 10, 000 intellectually disabled athletes and trainers from more than 160 countries and regions. The actual competition began on Wednesday, with athletics, volleyball and football. The age range of the participants spans from eight to 69 years old.
Football has the largest number of participants, with more than 1,200 players, whilst athletics follows with 1,100. There will also be four demonstration sport competitions: cricket, dragon dance, dragon boat race and wheelchair races.
