China had built "more than 200 wind power plants as of 2008," making it the world's fourth-largest supplier of wind energy, state media reports.
The claim follows comments by Lu Yanchang, Vice Chairman of the China Science and Technology Association, that China now ranks behind only the United States, France and Spain for wind energy capacity. Wind power now accounts for around 1.5 per cent of the country's total installed electricity capacity, with the majority of wind farms located in Inner Mongolia and Hebei province. Based on current growth rates, the Chinese Renewable Energy Industry Association predicts that China's wind capacity could reach 50,000MW by 2015. |
