China's credit card debt that was "at least six months overdue" rose 133.1 per cent year on year in the first quarter of 2009, to RMB4.97 bn, according to the People's Bank of China.

This week, China raised the tax on cigarette cartons costing RMB70 yuan to 56 per cent, from 45 per cent. The tax on cigars rose to 36 per cent, from 25 per cent.

In Shanghai, a total of 6.42 million sq m of land area was sold during January to May 2009, an increase of 116 per cent year on year, according to Colliers International.

China expects to have around 13,000 km of high-speed railways capable of handling trains travelling at more than 200 kph by 2012, according to the Ministry of Railways.

Shanghai received just over 1.94 million inbound tourists from January to April, down 11 per cent from the same 2008 period, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
