Canada-based Fairmont Hotels and Resorts - which currently has 57 luxury properties around the world, only one of which is in Asia (Fairmont Singapore) - has announced the expansion of its 120-year-old brand, with six Asian properties to be opened by 2010 in China, India and the Philippines.
1 July will mark Fairmont’s entry into China, when the 222-room Fairmont Beijing - originally intended for a pre-2008 Olympic launch - finally opens with a RMB7 million party featuring Sarah Brightman.
Fairmont Yangcheng Lake, Kunshan, is due to follow in October 2009, offering 210 rooms on the shores of Yangcheng Lake, Jiangsu province. Aside from the area’s famous hairy crabs, the location lies within 15 minutes of the commercial and tourist centres of Shanghai and Suzhou on the new high-speed Shanghai-Beijing train link, due to open before the 2010 World Expo.
Fairmont’s highest profile China property is planned for the first half of 2010. The Fairmont Peace Hotel, resurrects Shanghai’s pre-eminent heritage hotel address on the Bund as a 256-room luxury hotel. “We are working closely with (government) partners Jinjiang to restore the hotel to its former grandeur,” said Ian Wilson, Fairmont’s Regional Vice President (Asia) addressing media in Shanghai this week.
Other Fairmont resorts in the pipeline in China include a 702-room resort in Haitang Bay, Sanya, and a 1,300-room hotel on the Cotai Strip in Macau.
