Shanghai-born Chinese national hero and Houston Rockets basketball centre Yao Ming's foot injury could threaten his professional career, the Rockets' team doctor told the Houston Chronicle newspaper.

The 7-feet 6-inch, seven-time NBA All-Star fractured his foot during the Western Conference semi-final match against the Los Angeles Lakers in May. Described by team manager Daryl Morey as "the cornerstone of the franchise, Yao is the Houston team's second-highest paid star, after Tracy McGrady, earning USD15.07m per year.

"At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career-threatening," Clanton told the www.chron.com website. A CT scan showed "Yao’s injury not only failed to heal as expected but has gotten worse, potentially requiring a surgical remedy."
