The Formula 1 title race remains wide open after Britain's Lewis Hamilton was unable to finish the Grand Prix of China - allowing Kimi Raikkonen to claw back ground in the championship . The Finnish driver took the typhoon rain-affected race in Shanghai, with Hamilton's teammate Fernando Alonso securing second place.

Hamilton started the race from pole position seeking to claim the F1 title in his rookie season on Chinese soil. He started well, managing to expand the lead to eight seconds, with his closest opponents, Raikkonen and Alonso, followed by Felipe Massa. All went well for Hamilton until lap 30, when he turned into the pit lane, spun into the gravel trap and got stuck. His dreams of becoming world champion in Shanghai were spent.

Occasional rain made the racing conditions torrid, making it easier for Raikkonen to defend his lead, and he won the China Grand Prix and collected 10 points. Hamilton (107 points) now leads Alonso (103 points) and Raikkonen (100 points) as the F1 circus heads for its season finale in Brazil on 21 October.
