China is bracing itself for "an upward battle against an H1N1 flu pandemic in the autumn-winter season" that could infect "tens of millions of people across the country," a senior health official has warned.
The news gets worse. "Severe cases or even fatalities will be unavoidable," said Liang Wannian, Deputy Director of the Chinese Health Ministry's emergency office, in an unusually candid press conference in Beijing."Half of the patients could develop clinical symptoms and several million will seek medical help." Swine flu is "spreading faster in China now that autumn is here," Liang said, with "more than half" of the nearly 7,000 confirmed cases in China having been detected between 24 August and 10 September. More worryingly, "cluster outbreaks are replacing isolated cases," Liang added, with 207 cases of large-scale infections being reported in China since mid-June. Liang confirmed that China has "prepared enough Tamiflu for 10 million people." It is the first time China's health authority has revealed the exact number of Tamiflu orders, state media said.
