Hainan Airlines has received approval from the United States Department of Transportation to launch a direct flight service between Beijing and Hawaii.

The route is slated to launch in early 2010, initially with one flight per week. Hawaii's tourism authorities lobbied the DOT to approve the Hainan service arguing it will help bring more Chinese tourists to the islands of Hawaii. Around 60,000 Chinese tourists visited Hawaii in 2008.

Hawaiian media reports that "Hainan plans to eventually increase the frequency of the Beijing-Honolulu service up to three flights a week as demand builds." Hainan Airlines currently runs four flights each week to Seattle.
