China counted a total of 11 operating nuclear power units as of April 2009, with a total installed capacity of 9.1 GW. In addition, 24 nuclear power units are planned or under construction with a total potential installed capacity of 25.4 GW, according to a new China Nuclear Power Industry Report compiled by www.researchandmarkets.com.
In 2008, China's nuclear power generating capacity had reached 68.4 Twh, or only 1.99 per cent of the total global generating capacity. China, however, is ramping up its nuclear power investment, and has targeted raising the proportion of nuclear power installed capacity from four per cent to eight per cent in the long term.
Chinese state media today reports that China's nuclear power installed capacity "is expected to top 70 GW by 2020, 75 per cent higher than the government's original target." The report says that installed nuclear power capacity "will reach 40 GW by 2020, and will generate 260 billion to 280 billion kilowatt hours of electricity each year," accounting for four to six per cent of the country's total power output.
