It's not just factories and car exhausts that are contributing to China's pollution troubles. Take its smoking situation, for example. State media reports that there are 360 million people in China that smoke. This is, according to statistics from the World Health Organization, one quarter of the world's entire smoking population. At the same time, the 360 million Chinese more than smoke above their weight, consuming one-third of all cigarettes that are produced worldwide.
These global statistical figures have now been reinforced by a regional
research project conducted by Horizon Research, which interviewed 2,650
people in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou about their smoking habits.
The study finds that 28.5 per cent of adult people living in those
three cities smoke. Interestingly, only 3.1 per cent of all women
interviewed admitted that they smoke. The research also revealed that a
smoker consumes an astonishing 17 cigarettes per day on average, which
is "less than years ago", according to China Daily.
