Alibaba Targets Record Internet IPO
Hangzhou-based internet trading portal Alibaba.com may raise a record HKD13.1 bn (USD1.69 bn) after setting its IPO share price at the top of the indicative range, eh South China Morning Post reports. Analysts are speculating that the company founded by charismatic entrepreneur Jack Ma in 1999 could enjoy the world’s largest ever internet stock IPO on 6 November, surpassing Google’s 2004 record figure of USD1.67 bn.
China Plans 19 New Air Routes and High-Altitude Airport
China’s General Administration of Civil Aviation has announced hat I
will open up 19 new international air routes between Chinese and major
international cities before the end of March 2008. The new destinations
are likely ot include Sydney, Athens, and Kolkata. At the same time, 11
new domestic Chinese air routes will be created linking air hubs to
smaller cities. It added that 21 Chinese airlines will cut 502 domestic
flights and add 311 international flights to meet changing industry
demands. In May, China will also open the world’s second-highest
airport, in the mainly Tibetan area of Kangding in Sichuan province.
Located 4,280 metres above sea level the new airport, with an annual
capacity for 330,000 passengers, will be lower than only Tibet’s Qamdo
airport, situated at 4,334 metres.
Foreign Insurers Gain Shanghai Market Share
As China’s insurance market becomes more competitive, foreign insurance
companies are using their broader product portfolios to gain market
share with innovative products – gaining four percentage points in the
Shanghai market within three months. At the end of September, foreign
insurances had gained 26 per cent of the Shanghai market, although the
national share is just 4.38 per cent. Shanghai insurers' premium income
in the first nine months totalled RMB35.750 bn, up 15.53 per cent year
on year.
China and The US Talk Tourism
31 leading Chinese tourism officials, headed by Du Jiang,
Vice Chairman of the China National Tourism Administration, and more
than three dozen U.S. state tourism directors held a one-day summit in
Charlotte, North Carolina, to discuss future travel and tourism
cooperation. The meeting follows the recent Sino-US air services
agreement to expand air frequencies and routes between the two
countries. In 2006, China and U.S. combined had a total of 2.35 million
visits. According to local reports, the meeting sought to actively
explore opportunities for cooperation and exchange between Chinese
provinces and American states.
