An increasingly assured Phil Mickelson took control of the HSBC Champions on Saturday, carding a third round 68 at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai for a 14 under par total of 202. He takes a three shot lead into the final day, after leader on the first two days. Kevin Stadler, shot a one over par third round.
The left-handed three-time Major winner’s nearest opponents, and
playing partners for the final day, will be two Englishmen: Ross Fisher
and Paul Casey. Both players produced form in the third round, Fisher
matching Mickelson’s 68 for a 12 under par total of 204 to take second
place, while Casey claimed third on 11 under par 205 after a sparkling
six under par 66, the best round of the third day.
Second round leader Kevin Stadler is in fourth place on ten under par,
while five players share fifth place on seven under par 209: Major
champions Padraig Harrington and Vijay Singh, plus Andrew McLardy,
Richard Sterne and the defending champion Y E Yang.
“It would mean a lot to come out on top here in China on my first time
here,” Mickelson said. “I plan to try and play a little bit more on a
global basis, trying to add a couple more tournaments worldwide. But I
think China provides an opportunity for incredible growth in the game
of golf and I would love to have an emotional tie here which winning
the HSBC Champions tournament would bring.”
