American Phil Mickelson won his first overseas tournament for 14 years, after snatching a tight play-off win at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. The left-handed American sank a four-foot birdie putt on the second play-off hole after throwing away a three shot overnight lead.
A scorching five-under-par final round of 67 by Britain’s Lee Westwood
saw the end-of-day lead tied between three players, Westwood, Ross
Fisher and overnight leader Phil Mickelson. Westwood’s extraordinary
last round featured eight birdies and three bogeys. All three players
finished on 10 under after 72 holes – forcing a three-way play off at
the Sheshan International Golf Club.
Tough, windy conditions on the final day saw Mickelson card a four over
par 76 and Fisher a two over par 74. The overnight joint second-placed
player Paul Casey carded a six-over-par 78 and dropped down the field.
America’s Kevin Stadler, who led the field for the first two days, was
one shot behind the top three players, on nine under, and Fiji’s Vijay
Singh and British Open Champion Padraig Harrington both ended on eight
under.
Defending champion Yang Yong-eun of Korea was disqualified overnight
and did not play in Sunday's fourth round after signing for two wrong
scores after his third round on Saturday. Yang signed for a bogey at
the 12th, when he scored a double bogey five, and he also signed for a
par three at the 17th, when he scored a birdie two - and the two
mistakes balanced each other out for his total score of 70.
