Switzerland’s world number one Roger Federer claimed his fourth Tennis Masters Cup title on Sunday in Shanghai, cruising to an imperious 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win over sixth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer.
Federer, who lost his first round-robin match of the tournament to
Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez last Monday, has since been in irresistible
form – dismissively brushing aside Nikolay Davidenko and Andy Roddick
in the group stage, and then thrashing Rafael Nadal in Saturday’s semi
final.
One sided from the beginning, the final never really got going into a
proper match. Federer dominated from the start, breaking Ferrer twice
for an easy 6-2 first set win, and then demolishing the Spaniard 6-3 in
a 37-minute second set, during which the world number one took one
hundred per cent of points from his first serve. Two sets down after
just an hour of play, Ferrer – who had won all four of his previous
matches in the tournament – showed his frustration by snapping his
racquet over his knee. A service break by Federer in the fourth game of
the third set effectively ended the match as a contest.
