The Chinese press cannot get enough of uber-celebrity Paris Hilton – who is visiting Shanghai to attend the 2007 MTV Awards on Friday. State news agency Xinhua today printed several photos of the “millionaire heiress to the Hilton hotel chain” under a bold headline: “Paris shuns Hilton Hotel in Shanghai.” Instead, she is staying at the newly-opened Hyatt on the Bund hotel. La Hilton was also photographed holding toy pandas while visiting Yu Garden.

As well as attending the MTV awards, Hilton has been spending a lot of time shopping. She was spotted yesterday afternoon with several bags from the Xintiandi branch of Shanghai Tang, the colourful Hong Kong-based fashion brand built by entrepreneur David Tang and now part of the Richemont group. Its Chairman, Raphael le Masne de Chermont, once famously called Shanghai Tang “China’s first luxury brand.”

Later, Hilton purchased more chi-chi fashions from Shanghai-based couturier Lu Kun. No shrinking violet himself, Lu Kun is being aggressively marketed as China’s hottest young designer, and has showcased his works at many of the world’s top fashion shows. Next year, he will collaborate with New York-based designer Han Feng and other Chinese fashion glitterati for a special exhibition at London’s V&A museum.
