Lenovo Opens First European Plant
Beijing-based computer maker Lenovo Group will set up a plant in Poland, its fifth new facility this year, as it seeks to advance its business in Europe. Lenovo will invest USD20m in a new factory in the Legnica Special Economic Zone, which will employ one thousand people. “Our new plant in Poland is an example of Lenovo's world-sourcing strategy in action," said Gerry Smith, Senior Vice-President of Lenovo's global supply chain. So far this year, Lenovo has also announced new facilities in Shanghai, Baddi in India, Monterrey in Mexico, and North Carolina.
Pirelli Invests And Wants 10 Per Cent Market Share
Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli has opened a new USD97m plant in
Shandong province, and announced that it is driving for a 10 per cent
market share of China's premium car tire market. "We aim to have 10 per
cent, but this could take at least three to four years," said Francesco
Gori, Pirelli’s CEO. The plant will produce three million tires per
year, with the potential to expand to 10 million in the future.
Coal Tax To Increase 200 Per Cent
China's coal tax rate is expected to rise from one to three per cent,
China Business News reports. The new coal tax plan has been submitted
to the State Council for approval, Sun Youhai, an official from the
environmental protection and resource conservation committee of the
National People's Congress, told state media. According to official
figures, China's consumption of coal products in 2006 totaled 2.4
billion tonnes, or 70 per cent of the country's total energy use. It is
widely expected that the price of coal products will increase by at
least 12 to 15 per cent next year.
