As part of its 2008 Olympic preparations, Beijing has ordered all hotels in the city to provide condoms in every bedroom in a bid to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, reports Reuters. The move comes after cases of infection rose 54 per cent in the first 10 months of 2007.
With many hundreds of thousands of visitors set to descend on Beijing
next August, every hotel is likely to be sold out. While hotel managers
must provide condoms for their guests, China’s state media agency
Xinhua said they are free to set their own condom pricing policy.
Last year, the State Council urged local governments to provide access
to condoms in all public places. Last week, the Beijing health
authorities said the capital registered 973 new HIV/AIDS cases from
January to October. Needle sharing and unprotected sex were the main
sources of transmission. State media reported a total of 18,543 new
cases of HIV/AIDS across China in the first half of 2007.
