Chongming Island off the coast of Shanghai – the purported home of the “world’s first self-sustaining eco city” Dongtan – may also have another new attraction. The Walt Disney Co is apparently negotiating to site its much-delayed Shanghai theme park on the island, Shanghai Daily reports. The newspaper report comes after fevered speculation that Shanghai Disneyland would be built in the Chuansha area of Pudong.
Disney will apparently invest up to RMB40 bn in its second China theme
park, following Hong Kong, which opened in September 2005. The Hong
Kong park drew 5.2 million visitors in the 12 months following its
opening, 400,000 fewer than forecast. Construction of the Shanghai park
is slated to begin after the 2010 World Expo.
