Korea’s Daewoo International, the operator of Burma’s largest gas field, has awarded the rights to buy new natural gas to an unnamed Chinese company, which beat out a bid from a leading Indian energy supplier.

 

China, India, Thailand, South Korea and Japan are all competing fiercely for a share in Burma’s gas supply, as new gas fields are being increasingly discovered. China is thought to have sanctioned the building of a new gas pipeline as part of the deal. The southeast Asian country had around 19 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves in 2006.
